Introduction The purpose of this paper is to bring to fore the role played by the explorers, Christian missionaries, and traders in the conquest of Africa, as well as some salient factors that made Africans resistance an exercise in futility. However, for proper understanding of the topic and clarity of our spatial coverage, a brief survey into the geographical description of Africa is of utmost importance. Africa is presently the world’s second-largest and second-most populous continent. The continent is three times larger than the United States and Europe with about 30.2 million km 2 (11.7 million sq mi) including adjacent Islands. With about 1.1 billion people as of 2013, it accounts for about 15 percent of the world’s human population.
